Olney Pirates
|
The Cobras and Pirates rematch was rained out
after the top of the 4th inning. In a see-saw battle, the Pirates had just
taken a 5-4 lead when the game was stopped. After falling behind 3-0 in
the top of the first inning, the Cobras staged a 2 out rally started by
Louis Ullrich's deep shot off the wall in right center for a double. After
a single by Wes Stanley and a walk to Trevor House, Brian Bobby drove in
2 runs with a single to left field. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Cobras
tied the game at 4 all. Chris Wilson led off with a triple to the wall in
left center. Louis Ullrich brought him home with another deep bomb to center
for a double. A single by Trevor House sent Louis home to even the score.
A nice defensive play in the 2nd inning was started by TJ Shaughnessy's
diving attempt at a soft line drive at 3rd base. After glancing off TJ's
glove, shortstop Jeff Gregory fielded the ball and forced the runner out
at 3rd base and threw to 2nd to complete an inning ending double play.

Fauquier
Fauquier
(14 Year Olds)
McLean
|
The Cobras started off the Manassas Memorial Day Tournament with a solid
victory over the 15 yr old Fauquier team. Louis Ullrich pitched a great
complete game shut-out, giving up 3 scattered hits, 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts
in 6 innings. The defense was sharp, too, highlighted by 2nd baseman Taylor
Rife's diving catch of a ground ball in the 5th inning. With 2 outs and
2 runners on base, Taylor fielded the ball and threw from a sitting position
to nip the runner at first base, ending Fauquier's attempt to tie the game.
The Cobras took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on Louis's deep
line drive double to center field that scored Chris Wilson. Insurance runs
in the 5th inning were started by a lead-off single by Bud Hall. Brian Gleason's
sacrifice bunt moved Bud to second base, and TJ Shaughnessy followed with
a single. Next, Taylor Rife singled, driving in Bud and moving TJ to 3rd
base. TJ scored on a ground-out by Jake Tisinger, and Taylor scored on an
error by the third baseman on Trevor House's grounder.
Final score: Cobras won 4-0
Jeff Gregory and Trevor House combined to pitch the Cobras to victory in
the second game of the tournament. Stats for the game were kept in the official
tournament scorebook, which the Manassas Baseball League has, so further
details about the game are not available.
Final score: Cobras won 9-5
The Cobras fought to a draw through 3 innings against the 15 yr olds, but
wound up falling behind in the last inning to the eventual Tournament winners.
Due to a time limit, the game lasted only 4 rainy and cool innings against
the trash-talking poor sports from McLean. Taylor Rife and Louis Ullrich
pitched well under the adverse conditions. On offense, the Cobras were led
by Jeff Gregory (3 for 3, 2 RBI), Chris Wilson (1 for 3, double, RBI), and
Louis Ullrich (1 for 1). Brian Bobby, Brian Gleason, and Raul Colon (RBI)

to a local establishment near the field for few cold ones after the game
(Just kidding! His Dad drove him.) . Leading hitters were Louis (3 for
3, 3 RBI), Wes Stanley (1 for 1, walk, RBI), Bud Hall (2 for 2, triple,

of the game and won in 4 innings by slaughter rule. Pitcher Jeff Gregory
held the Condors to 3 hits, no walks, and no runs. On offense, the Cobras started
the July 4th fireworks early with several bombs of their own, including Brian
Gleason's 3 run homerun to left field and deep triples by both Trevor
House and Raul Colon. Jeff Gregory, Brian Bobby, and Brian Nolen each
were 2 for 3, while Louis Ullrich was 2 for 2 and Taylor Rife was 1 for
1 (walk).
Final Score: Cobras win 12-0.
1st Inning
After a 3 hour delay, the Championship game started at about 9:00 PM at
the minor league ballpark in Allentown, PA. Although attended by less than
30 fans for each side on this rainy, humid, night, the stadium rocked
all game long in a tense battle of the 2 unbeaten teams. The visiting
Cobras scored first when Wes Stanley's single drove in Louis Ullrich (reached
on fielder's choice). Starting pitcher Trevor House held the home team
to no runs in the first inning after a lead-off single. Left fielder Raul
Colon tracked down a deep shot near the foul line for the first out, and
his quick throw back to the infield caused the runner to miss touching 2nd base on his way back to first (he was called
out on appeal when play resumed for the second out). Wes Stanley's diving catch
on a sinking line drive in right field made the 3rd out in the first inning.
2nd Inning
The Cobras struck again to take a 2-0 lead when Bud Hall reached first
on a walk. Bud used his speed to get to 3rd base on a wild pitch and a
passed ball, and then scored on Brian Gleason's fielder's choice grounder.
The South Vineyard team scored in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 2-1.
Chris Wilson ran down a shot to deep center field for the first out. After
a walk and stolen base, the run scored on a single to left field. Trevor
stranded a man at 3rd base with 2 fly outs to left field to end the inning.
3rd Inning
After the Cobras failed to score in the top of the 3rd, the opponents
scored 2 runs on 3 hits to tie the game. The Cobras took the lead again in the
top of the 4th. Raul Colon led off with a walk, and Bud followed with a double to
deep right field. Anthony Monica reached on a walk to load the bases. Brian
Gleason then drove in one run with a fielder's choice grounder. Brian
Nolen next hustled to first base and drive in a run on an error by the
first baseman. Jeff Gregory walked, and Chris Wilson drove in the 3rd
run of the inning on a fielder's choice grounder.
4th Inning
Once again, the South Vineyard team rallied to score 3 runs in the bottom
of the 4th to tie the game. Louis had come in to pitch, and the opponents
managed to get 3 hits, including 2 deep shots to left and center field.
Louis struck out 2 batters, and a fly ball to right ended the scoring.
It was the Cobras turn to respond in the top of the 4th, and they did
so with 4 more runs across the plate. Trevor got things going with a single
to right field, and Brian Bobby walked to set the stage for Bud's booming 2 RBI triple to right-center.
After the second out and walks to Brian Gleason and Taylor Rife, the bases were
loaded for Jeff Gregory's 2 RBI single to right field.
5th Inning
With a 4 run lead, Louis shut down the other team in the 5th, 6th, and
7th innings. In the 5th, he struck out the number 4 & 5 hitters, and after
a walk, induced a pop-up to 1st base. At bat in the top of the 6th, the Cobras
were looking to score just 1 more run to lengthen the lead. A lead-off single
by Louis started things rolling, and he was moved to 2nd base on a nice
sacrifice bunt by Wes. Louis took 3rd base on an error by the pitcher
on a pick-off attempt at 2nd, and Brian Gleason's sacrifice fly to right
field scored the insurance run.
6th Inning
In the bottom of the 6th, Louis struck out 2 hitters and got some fine
defensive help from 2nd baseman TJ Shaughnessy. A sharp grounder up the middle appeared
to be a base hit to center field before TJ made a nice backhanded stab
and threw to first to get the out. In the top of the 7th, the Cobras again
threatened to score one more run on a lead-off 4 pitch walk to Bud. Anthony
Monica laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Bud to second. South
Vineland then changed pitchers and managed to get the last 2 outs and
end the scoring opportunity.
7th Inning
In the bottom of the 7th, South Vineland attempted a comeback started
by a lead-off walk, with the heart of their order coming to the plate. Louis
had other plans, however, as he fielded a sharp grounder back to him and
threw to Jeff at shortstop covering 2nd base. Jeff threw to first base
to complete the 1-6-3 double-play. Louis then struck out the #3 hitter
to end the game and start the celebration.
Final score: Cobras won 11-6.
After a long weekend of many great plays by the entire team, the Cobras
were presented their trophy and medallions as winners of the 2000 East
Coast Tournament Baseball July 4 Blast at about midnight. The season started
in the freezing days of practice in March and proceeded through games
in the cold rain and humid heat on fields in Fredericksburg, Manassas,
Olney, Centreville, Lynchburg, and Reading, PA. Games were played on beautiful
fields, such as Liberty University, and not so great fields, such as the
hard to find Reading field, where Louis's deep fly to left field was caught
by a fielder standing in weeds up over his waist. That night in Allentown,
PA, on July 3, 2000, in a professional baseball stadium, made it all seem
worthwhile.
CONGRATULATIONS COBRAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
